Dave Dirks takes two more first place finishes in His red 88 944 And sets a New Track record !
It started with a long tow and it ended with a long tow. The in between time was nothing but GREAT FUN !
The Long trip to MAM started at 11 pm on Wednesday night for Me. I was in Alaska ! Pretty sure that wins the longest trip to MAM ! After a little sleep and loading up I hit the road. First stop was at David Dirks's house. We tossed His car up on the trailer and headed out. Oh the stories were non stop as We traveled accross the great state of Nebraska. Just past Hastings I finally started to get tired and since we were only 2 hours from MAM it seemed a great place to stop.
The next morning I awoke to the engine starting as David took the wheel to finish Our drive to the track. One important note about MAM: do not enter the track from the south ! The dirt road trashed our clean cars. We choose an area to set up 944 Central and unloaded both of our fine cars. As the other cars arrived we did our best to park all of the 944's near us!
Eric and Linda Kuhns had a little shorter drive and arrived at the track in time for some break in laps on his new engine. Eric has just volunteered to be the 944 Challenge series director the the NASA Midwest region. With the help of VFC Engineering they should have a strong field of 944's by next year.
Saturday finally came I was quick to get out on track and try out my new engine - partially rebuilt after my 88 engine had some bad times. Before I made it to the second turn, the engine went south.
On Saturday night I found the problem and was able to get the car running for Sunday but on the straights I was giving up 10 MPH.
This left David and Eric Kuhns to race it out Saturday!
Our qualifing session went well with Eric posting a 1:51.2 and David a 1:52.8 . The racing was going to be tight!
Eric got a great start in the main race and the battle was on. Both cars were never more than 100 yards apart for the entire race! In the closing laps, going into turn 4 Eric slipped up out of the line and it was all David needed David slipped by and the chasee now became the chaser. David took first and a new track record 1:52.1 . Eric promised to make Dave earn the win the next day!
