Page 1 of 3 It's all about Friendship and having Fun !
With a little help from our friends the 944-spec Racers from NASA Rocky Mountain had a Great time in Pueblo ,Colorado in July !
July 21/22 NASA Rocky Mountain at Pueblo Motorsports Park. Racing in July can be hot even in Colorado ! So it was great to see Norman Hamden come up from AZ to spend the weekend with His fellow racers. I met Norman last year at Miller Motorsports Park. He introduced me to the friendship that is the 944-spec racing community. On our first day of racing with each other he suggested that we swap cars. I could see what a real 944-spec car could do and he could give me pointers on how to get my car going ! How many other racers would do that ? How many other classes of racing do the fast drivers want to make the slow drivers catch up?, I know some groups claim they will help you but you are the competition... Thanks Norman for introducing me to FUN racing ! So what did I do with my knowledge of how to have fun racing ? Well I showed others ! Last year the 944-SPEC crowd in the Rocky Mountain Region was .... just me. At our first race this year ,thanks to Todd Imwold, we had 5 cars. Thanks again Todd for towing out from Utah. Todd's first event with us was the Miller event the same year I met Norman... Funny how that works out...
After Todd flew past me going Up 5,6 and 7 turns he showed us how the rally drivers do it ! The weekend was off to a great start a few weeks before it even started ! Thanks to a couple of Great PCA racers the main PCA race group came out to race with us . Mostly they were F stock cars but we did have Our first 944 Cup car Driver Dan Mayer, welcome Dan !
Now thats a Nice grid ! In the Rocky Mountain Region Dave "Der Kommissar" Dirks has jumped out this year to demonstrate his driving skills ! In his first 5 races His only finish not in first has been his Comp school weekend, and it was a second (sorry Weston) ! With this in mind we started him in the back of the pack for Saturday's race . If that's not enough we also begged and pleaded with Norman Hamden to come up from the real heat of AZ to help the rest of us keep up with Der Kommissar. Norman showing blazing speed in Qualifying would also start ... at the back. Our start on Saturday was to be separate from the rest of the field but not have its own green flag . Enter the first mistake I made that race. When it came time to take the green flag the 944-spec pole sitter went to the wrong side of the track gridding us in with the rest of the field . So what was to be my best chance to keep Norman and DK (Der Kommissar) behind me turned into a mess FAST !
As you can see DK gets by me easy on the start but I'm after him for all I'm worth passing the entire 944-spec field but not able to get past that last SM. In the second lap I was holding up Norman so when He got past me I thought I could just follow him through the traffic. One of our Fstock friends had an oil line rub on his axle shaft . It only took 2 laps for that to chew through and Oil down Half of the track ! The oil helped me get past Dave Dalton in the red SM but not enough to close in on DK and Norman. Norman did finally get past the orange SM but not enough time was left to get pass DAVE Dirks....who took home His 5th win in a row !
