Page 3 of 9 Countdown to the 25: Thunderbolt had a total of three races and a couple of track days to debug any problems. we had a problem with the AFM electronics where it was down on power, replacing the AFM fixed it. The motor otherwise was running fine with no leaks and did not burn oil. The 25 Hours was coming up fast and we were making a inventory of spare parts to bring. We brought complete front strut assemblies, A-arms and tie rods just in case we get hit on the front side. Spare radiator, fans, hoses, brackets if the front end gets damaged and a complete rear end with trailing arms, shocks, spare axles and transmission. We also brought a spare master/slave cylinder, alternators, front/rear rotors, brake pads, spare light bulbs and fuses. I brought a complete spare parts car up just in case we need some odd ball parts from it. The parts car was our 24 Hours of LeMons car and the puzzled and WTF looks when I trailered it in on Friday was priceless. Autopoint fabricated a rally light bar for apex lighting and additional center lighting. On fridays test day we burnt out a alternator and had to be towed in. We replaced the alternator and check the voltage/ampage draw with all the lights on and found it to be O.K. It was a good thing it failed on the test day and not in the race.
The early evening practice/qualifying was interesting. We taped up the rear window with painters tape leaving small slits to prevent being blinded by car lights from behind. This worked fairly well but left hand turns with lights reflecting off the side view mirror was blinding. Our pit crew made a trip to the local Walmart after the evening drivers meeting to get some window tint for the side view mirror and back hatch window, a telescoping paint handle to make a lollipop sign in case we lose radio contact and have to signal a driver to come in. They also bought more white relective tape to outline our car number because the control tower was complaining the orange number was not contrasting enough against a red car. Our original #97 had a high contrast but we had to use a replacement #19 number plate for the 25 Hours race.
