Page 8 of 9 Lessons learned:We learned a lot from the 25 Hours. One important item is to remove the unleaded gas restrictor for faster refueling. It took us over two minutes to dump five gallons into the car while other teams with this mod was able to dump five gallons in about 20 seconds. Changing out one tire at a time per pit stop in the hot pits might have been better than bringing the car into the paddocks and changing out all four, we're still analyzing this strategy. I believe if we got the refueling right we could have moved up a couple of positions but our power to weight could not match the front running E2 cars. btw- congratulations to team BiggsB on their E2 class win.
Another thing we learned was how the other teams classified their cars in the E2 class. 1st and 2nd were SCCA ITA and 3rd was classified as NASA PTE. I studied the PT class rules which starts a given car off at a predetermined base class, various modifications are assigned a point value and for every 20 points you accumulate, you move up one class. These rules are design to equalize a wide variety of different cars from different manufacturers which is a slightly different philosophy from 944-Spec which tries to equalize just one type of car make and manufacturer. Our 944-Spec class is a mildly prepared low cost class with very limited modifications and a 2600lb minimum weight limit which is achievable without the use of fiberglass body panels or lexan. This is a good thing for budget racing but the 944-Spec class doesn't map out very well to the E2 class. Using the PT class rules a 944 would start off as a PTF car. I can accumulate up to 39 points and build it out to the limit of PTE and stay under PTD which would map to the E1 class. With 39 points I believe I can build out a very competitive ultra light 944 PTE car that can podium in the E2 class. Of course the build price would go up drastically not just because of the cost of lightweight parts but also because it would no longer be 944-Spec legal and would be a single purpose E2 class car.
