We're beginning the second half of the NorCal 2010 944-Spec season with old and new rivalries heating up for the season championship points.  Close racing made for some exciting action at Infineon.

Back in Action

Jerry and Greg had contact at last month's Thunderhill CW event which looked like major damage.  Amazing they both got their cars repaired and back into the game!  Jerry still needs to get the replacement body panels on his car painted but they both look great.

After the adventures of the last race weekend Autopoint Motors had some challenging work ahead of them. A parts car was sourced and dropped off to the body shop. It would donate it's front end to repair Ol'Pokey and the rear of the car would go to repair Gregs' black car.

A week before the June race at Infineon Autopoint called me and said my car was ready. Two weeks to repair some pretty sever damage was really working fast. I signed up for the Friday test and tune at the track to ensure that both Ol'Pokey and I were ready to race the following day.

Testing showed the car was as good as before if not better, and I achieved a personal best time at the track. Bring on the Racing!

Saturday Race

With so much action around the track, it's best if this race report is given from multiple sources.

Northern California 944-Spec once again shows itself a great series with close racing and non-stop battles throughout most of the field.  This event also brought an interesting bonus: the blending of Spec Boxster into our midst!  The 944's and drivers demonstrated their worth, by proving they could be as fast, or faster, than the Boxsters despite our 50 fewer horsepower and less tire.

Up front on Saturday, Rick and Steve held a tight 1-2 battle with Sid just a few steps behind them.

It was very interesting to have three Spec Boxsters mix in with our starting grid.  Definitely made it more challenging during our start because it put us in different starting positions.  My goal was to try and get ahead of the Boxster next to me through turn 2 but as i hit turn 2, I was side by side and the extra power from the Boxster shined and I fell behind him before turn 3.  Coming up on turn 7, I took the line right behind the 944 leader but misjudged the braking capabilities of Steve as he took me on the inside of 7 and passed me like I was standing still.

Steve Sid

Just had to try and keep up with the leaders and was doing pretty well through more than half of the race.  Steve showed his skills by following a faster 911 into turn 11 as Rick was giving up his line to a faster car and was able to take the lead.

Steve Rick

The chase was on and Rick was not going to just sit back and relax.  I had a great seat watching the action.  Both guys were pushing each other faster and faster and eventually started to pull away from me when faster traffic got between us.  Somewhere near the end of the race, Steve almost lost it in turn 8 and Rick took advantage of his mistake and regained the lead and finished just slightly ahead of Steve.

In the middle of the pack, Jerry and I continue to build what is bound to become a healthy (and quite fun) rivalry, going full races nose-to-tail.  We had a Spec Boxster join in the mix this time.  Jerry and I took turns passing and getting passed again by the Boxster before I managed to pull the lead and hold it with some help from traffic for a 4-5 finish.

Sunday Race

by Jerry W

Sundays Race again had Cameron Qual in 4th and me 5th. On the start we closed up to side by side by Turn 2 and continued through T3 side by side. I had the inside for T3a and was able to just pull in front of Cameron. Now I had to create some space as we had proved through out the weekend we were running almost exactly the same lap times but each of us was better in different areas of the track. We ran close for many laps despite many different sets of fast traffic coming through - sometimes helping one car or the other and sometimes hindering.

Jerry Cameron

Near the end of the race Sid running in P3 went off in turn 10 which allowed both Cameron and I to both gain a position. Sid quickly recovered and was hot on the tail of Cameron as the three of us kept battling. On exiting the Esses I noticed that I only had Cameron in my mirrors - Sid had vanished. (turned out he had spun in T7 and was OK but had to wait to get back on track and lost time). Next pass of the Start/Finish showed the white flag and I pulled everything I had out to ensure I maintained a gap on Cameron. I held him off long enough and took the checker in P3.

As the weather got hotter on Sunday, there was a lot more heat on the track in more way than one.  Some incredible racing led to a serious shuffle of positions and some great track excitement.  Steve wouldn't let Rick rack up more first place finishes and held the first place lead against him.

Turn 4

A short way behind Sid still had sight of Rick coming through the S'es, and decided he could push a bit harder.  Unfortunately, his tires couldn't, and he lacked the grip to turn it at turn 10.  He went four-wheels-off on the exit but kept it pointed the right way to get back on track.  Unfortunately, that gave Jerry and me the opportunity to slip past him in our continuing brawl and move up to third and fourth places (respectively).

Esses

Sid pulled back on and within a few turns demonstrated his skill.  As I came up alongside Jerry through turn four, for what was bound to become a pass/repass move, Sid Tucked in behind me and the three of us bombed down the carousel in tight formation.  Sid moved to pass entering the next turn, but once again his tires couldn't take it.  As he passed me on the inside, he spun between Jerry's and my car leaving us to finish our battle with some exciting parallel drifts occuring through four and seven, and Jerry using his repertoire of race skills to hold his position for the third-place podium finish.

Sunday Race Continue...

By Sid L.

On Sunday, the weather was much hotter and without a cool suit, I knew I was going to be testing my mental focus.  I qualified 3rd but had to start in the 3rd row because there was a Spec Boxster in row 1 and row 2.  There was some confusion on my part as the pole setter can choose either the inside or outside position but the rest of the field had to keep to the traditional positions.  I got confused and actually started on the outside but when I realized my mistake, we were too close to starting and couldn't reverse it.  Took the green flag and raced through turn 1 into the tight turn 2 which I managed to get past Cameron who was on my left.  Jerry took advantage of Cameron's bad position and squeezed by him sticking to my bumper.  We were all pushing hard and I kept Rick within my sights but noticed Steve just slowly pulling away from Rick. Had to keep track of the traffic behind me and was pushed hard by Jerry and Cameron.

Turn 7

Eventually when faster traffic caught me, I was able to pull ahead of Jerry and surprisingly, still have Rick within a few car lengths ahead of me.  I was concentrating so hard on keeping up with Rick that I forgot about how hot it was and that my tires were starting to lose its grip.  I usually feel pretty confident going through turn 10 which some would say is the most dangerous turn at Infineon because of all the walls.  I had a lapse of judgement probably due to fatigue and missed the turn in and the car just wouldn't turn.   I knew I was way off the apex and was going to go plow the fields so I just told myself to drive through it.  I was so lucky to not get into a uncontrollable spin and hit a wall but managed to get my car to a dust cloud stop.  As soon as I gathered myself, I saw Jerry and Cameron fly by so I jumped right back on track.  I was able to catch up to them and going into turn 4, Jerry made a mistake and gave Cameron and me a chance to bunch up as we all went through turn 6.  I felt like I had a good run out of 6 and was able to get along side of Cameron on the right but Jerry moved over to the right just before the turn and braked hard and I just couldn't stop as fast due to my overweight car so I locked the tires up and was so lucky to not hit Jerry and managed to squeeze between them two and ended up spinning and stopped facing the oncoming traffic.  Jerry made a great defensive move and got around 7 smoothly while Cameron showed his skills by controlling his car and driving around my spin.  I was untouched and so thankful.

Once I was clear, I turned the car around and continued my chase but was way too far behind them so I just had to finish the race in 5th and lick my wounds.  Luckily the wounds were not physical to my car but just mental in my head.  Hopefully this will never happen again and the first thing I am going to do is to get rid of my 5 year old unshaven RA1 tires that I have been using for every track and race event since 2005 .  I don't know how many heat cycles (>120) have gone through these tires but they were the fastest when 4 grooves were barely showing.  Now that there is only 2 grooves showing, they feel much more greasy and unstable.  Maybe it is due to the really hot weather but it is definitely time for new tires and lose more weight.

Congratulations to all the winners and all the driver's who turned their personal best lap times either in qualifying or the race.

Special thanks to Rick who always shows the 944-Spec spirit by helping Ivan repair a broken mount on his racing seat and helping Cameron replace a broken front shock.   We conclude this race report with parting words from Cameron.

by Cameron L.

Rick managed to fully illustrate what a welcoming and helpful group the 944-Spec racers are.  He had brought his friend Paul out and let him use the same car he was racing for HPDE sessions all weekend.  On Saturday, Rick also did some crude mechanical checks of cars and discovered that one of my shocks was completely blown.  He happened to have a spare and worked before the race to help me replace it so that I'd have a car that didn't get upset by ever track imperfection.
