Hi Joe, I was looking for clarifications to the dash board rules # 16.2.2

I am looking at installing a Mychron gauge and it will replace all my factory gauges. Can I remove the complete dash panel/board and instrument cluster and just use a flat sheetmetal panel to cover wiring and such?

Does said panel have to be full width of car?

Can it just be on the drivers side?

Anyone have pics of their modified dash they will share?

Thanks,

I can't comment on the rules but the way I read it was that any replacement dash is legal. I've seen some people use fiberglass dashes like this:

To save the ~ $250, I stripped all the padding, insulation, etc from the stock dash and when all done, it probably only weighs 10 Lbs. Painted flat black it looks pretty good too. I don't have my gauges in yet to show you pics.

Of course you could go NASCAR style and form a sheetmetal dash but it could be a fair amount of work.

Look in the budget build thread - some pictures of the dash I made there.

The intent of the rule is to require something to make the dash look finished. This means that you don't see a mass of wires all over the place. The best way is either sheet metal or hard plastic. Then paint it matte black to reduce glare.

Thanks Joe, just wanted that clarified. Would prefer to only do it once.
