I'm working on a winter project budget build car also. I started a little cheaper then you by buying a 944 for $100 (one hundred). I bought the car just for the cookie cutters but it had straight body panels and good paint. The car wasn't running and the previous owner said it has been sitting in the yard for about 10 years. Got rid of the smelly gas, change the fuel pump, pour in some new gas and the engine started up. Turns out the engine has good compression. It is a automatic and the flex plate (flywheel) is broken, don't want to spend money repairing a automatic and a option is to cannibalize it.
I have enough spare parts to convert it to a manual 5-speed and that's the route I going.
