If you want to make a short shifter for your car, you can do it with $0.10 of metal and a welder:

Take 8mm off the cast piece (I used a hacksaw), and add 10mm to the plate steel and you are good to go!

That's not legal currently and it doesn't solve the problem of the sloppy shifter bushings. If anything, it should make the problem worse as its putting more stress on the poorly designed plasting piece.

However, it would be a cheap option for those that dont want to buy the 944only.com part should we allow a short shifter in the rulebook.

Brilliant research from the Mid-South Champion.

I think its important to note that really what everyone wants that is in favor of a new shifter, is actually an improved shifter mechanism not a short shifter. It just so happens that all the aftermarket parts which improve the shifter mechanism, also incorporate a shorter shift attribute to them. If there was an all billet component we could purchase to replace the plastic stuff, that would work. We just need to find a solution, other than fix old parts, which shores up the shifting feel and provides a better connection between car and driver so we reduce the potential for money shifts.

Don't knock it unless you have tried it.

It works great, have done it on multiple 944's and really makes the shifting work as you would want it to.

Have used it on my endurance race cars for the past 4 years with zero issues. Talking about 24 hour races, not 20 min sprints. Had it on street cars for years, again with zero issues.

Agreed on needing a rules change to be legal for Spec.

Not knocking it at all and no disrespect intended, i think it's a very innovative solution. I would love to try it, just have to stay within the rules.

I have no doubt that it would improve the feel of the shifter but what I meant is that eventually it could result in the failure of the plastic bushing in question. My reasoning is it would still be sloppy but the shorter throw would mask the problem while putting greater stress on the plastic piece that is the root of the problem.

This is offending part.

Some wanted to see a clearer pic of the problem area.

Or we could just allow autos for some of us who need not move a lever while also turning a wheel and pushing some pedals...
